With the sunshine comes the urge for colour and a desire for new expression in your artwork. The term programme invites you to look again at water based media beginning with pen, ink and wash and working through to complex colour choices in watercolour.

No need to be fearful because each key stage is accompanied by a live demonstration of the technique to make everything clear and guaranteed!

In addition you can find support in studying artist examples such as our own J M W Turner.  He shows us how to be strong and experimental as we seek to express feelings and observations. The permanent exhibition Line and Colour at Tate Britain must rate as one of the best displays in London.

What else will move your artwork to the next stage?  I particularly encourage you to develop your use of a sketchbook as a way of focussing your attention.  Use it not just for sketches but also  as a diary, album and scrap book as you try to make it personal to yourself.  Bring it to each class so you have additional reference and an anchor point for your distinctive approach.

All of this is extra to the basic intention of the class—providing great models in a creative setting.

Looking forward to the term!

BH

03-May-10

Bank Holiday – no class on Monday (Friday as normal).

3.

10-May-10

Foreshortening  A single form seen in perspective is said to be foreshortened, a hand pointing towards you, for example.  Master the three methods of seeing it correctly: viewfinder, horizontals and verticals, artist’s measurement.

4.

17-May-10

Portrait in line and wash  Drawing a portrait in line and adding washes of tone.

Demonstration 7.30 pm.

Portrait drawing in line and wash.

5.

24-May-10

Negative Space on distressed paper  Paint your figure before the class!  Well almost, because I'd like you to wash over some paper with a light array of colours in advance.  Think of sunsets, or veined marble, or a bleached oak door.  In class all you need to do is paint in the surrounding space to create your figure  (and maybe add one or two extra lines).  Pre-distressed paper available.

31-May-10

Half Term – no classes  During the break visit the permanent interactive exhibition Line and Colour at Tate Britain (Upper Clore Gallery—the green bit—hard to find).  It features the watercolours, drawings and sketchbooks of J M W Turner and analyses his methods in a most inspiring way.

6.

07-Jun-10

Tonal Watercolour  Build up layers of tone using a single colour such as Payne's Grey.

Demonstration 7.30 pm.

Tonal Watercolour

Materials for sale and to borrow.

7.

14-Jun-10

Anatomy focus  Expressive shoulder and neck.  The human shoulder is designed for a wide range of movements.  Be clear about what the bones and muscles are doing as we encourage our models to create some extreme poses.

Bring your anatomy book.  The best, if you need to buy, is Louise Gordon, Anatomy and Figure Drawing.

8.

21-Jun-10

Develop your colour technique by creating contrasts of complementary colour.  Study the colour wheel and look for the opposite in the shadows.

Demonstration 7.30 pm.

Watercolour with complementary colour.

Before the class do some colour tests placing opposite colours next to each other.

9.
